SILENCER SATURDAY #261: Resilient Suppressors RS9 and RSP

Good evening everyone and welcome back to TFB’s Silencer Saturday brought to you by Yankee Hill Machine, manufacturers of the new YHM Turbo T3 rifle suppressor. Last week we said goodbye to 2022 and a few of my favorite firearm and suppressor combinations from last year. This week we take a look at the Resilient Suppressors RS9 and RSP 9mm silencers. Are these your next new pistol and carbine suppressors? Let’s take a look.

There is a high level of risk aversion in the NFA world, especially when it comes to buying suppressors. Because silencers are considered life-long purchases, the lengthy ATF paperwork approval times, and the inability to ‘try before you buy’, many mainstream consumers tend to stick with well-known brands and models. Unfortunately this leaves up-and-coming silencer brands with low marketing budgets to fight over a small subset of NFA buyers who are willing to take a chance on the next SilencerCo or Dead Air.

So it’s ok to admit that you haven’t heard of Resilient Suppressors. Prior to the testing completed by Pew Science, I had not heard of them either. But their RS9 on the MP5K performed solidly when compared to other tested 9mm suppressors – enough that when Tyler Reeves emailed about a review, I wasn’t going to pass up the chance.

Sub machine guns or pistol caliber carbines (PCC) are some of the most satisfying firearms to suppress – with subsonic ammo in longer barrels, these platforms are compact, controllable, and quiet. The quiet part gets even better when the host has a delayed action to prevent gas and noise from escaping out of the ejection port.

I’m still in my questioning phase when it comes to pistol suppressors. Pistols are supposed to be compact, concealable, and easy to access in defensive situations. Doubling the length by adding a silencer basically kills all of those benefits. But if we are talking about pure fun, of course suppress everything.

The Resilient RSP is a feather-weight eight ounces with the booster assembly, which is impressive. Purists will turn up their noses at the aluminum baffle stack that follows three stainless steel baffles. Pistol caliber suppressors will see a high volume of subsonic rounds that will be susceptible to carbon buildup. However, the RSP is fully serviceable.

The Resilient RS9 is a unique shape with a large 1.7” diameter blast chamber followed by a normal diameter and length tube and baffle stack. The design centers around reducing port pop on blow-back PCC actions. The whole setup weighs about 12 ounces and is compatible with other manufacturer’s mounts like YHM’s three lug assembly. In comparison to the RSP, the RS9 features a full stainless steel baffle stack.

Let’s take a look at the numbers.

Despite my cautionary stance on pistol suppressors, the Resilient RSP is very quiet on the Beretta 92A3 which is one of the better pistol hosts available. It has a pleasant tone and I’d rate it as “hearing safe” with the right ammo. But I still recommend wearing hearing protection with any centerfire cartridge – suppressed or not.

The RS9 was quiet, but not GSL Phoenix level quiet. I did run into two issues. First, the new 147gr ammo I just picked up seemed to be going transonic in the MP5K which was unexpected. A few shots were subsonic, but some had down-range cracks.

Second, after re-reading the Pew Science write up, I remembered that I had not swapped out my SP5K locking piece for the 80 degree locking piece that is suggested for dedicated suppressor use. This may result in earlier unlocking and more gas escaping out of the ejection port.

I’ll need to pickup some different ammo and a new locking piece and retest the RS9 for some more consistent results.

These are well made suppressors that are priced fairly and have mount option capabilities. If aluminum doesn’t turn you off, I would say the the RSP would make a solid choice for your next 9mm pistol suppressor. I need to complete a follow up test for a fair comparison of the RS9 and the GSL Phoenix.

Thanks for reading. Be safe, have fun, and we’ll see you back here next weekend for another Silencer Saturday.
