Welcome everyone to the 180th edition of ‘Hot Gat or Fudd Crap?’, one of our many series here on TFB. If you’re new to the series, this is where we look at the most obscure firearms that are actually for sale and ask the question – is this Gat a sweet deal or only has a Fudd appeal? Each week the TFB staff weighs in with their thoughts, but readers get the final say in the poll at the bottom of each article.
In our last edition, our poll showed that you, the readers, decided the multi-colored 6.5 creed was fudd crap.
At this time, the original auction has ended with a final bid of $1,750 not meeting the reserve price. For any parties still interested, the item has been relisted and is still up for grabs. We can only hope this rifle can find its way to a new and caring home in the very near future.
In this week’s edition of HGFC, we look at a FAMAE SAF pistol chambered in 9mm. As is tradition, this made-in-Chile gat is currently up for sale on GunBroker with a current bid of $1,576 and No Reserve.
HOT GAT or FUDD CRAP?
Chilean Treasure or Miniature SIG Displeasure?
Let’s see what the Staff had to say about this week’s offering:
“I hate this but I don’t know why.” – Pete
“Where do you put the AA batteries and does it have Hop-Up?” – Nick C.
“Like all relatives of the Sig 55X, this is undeniably hot” – Daniel Y.
Selling this SIG 540-inspired gat is GunBroker seller Keystone Arms, located in Hillsville PA. Let’s see what they had to say about this rare imported pistol.

The FAMAE SAF is a SIG 540-inspired subgun produced in Chile by FAMAE since 1993. As you would imagine, it carries over a lot of the same external features like the rear diopter sight, charging handle, and trigger.
Sadly due to 922R restrictions, this one had to be imported as a pistol, so there’d be some hoops you’d have to jump through before it could be converted into a short-barreled rifle. Now by default, my brain jumps straight to “Oh it’s a SIG 550 pattern firearm, that’s awesome”, but is it really? At second glance you notice there’s no way to attach a suppressor. So, what other things might have changed along the way?
Well, as it turns out, quite a lot of the original features are gone. The gun is no longer gas operated and uses a simple blowback action, so no more rotating bolt. A few different variants of these were produced in 9mm and .40 S&W and there was even an integrally suppressed version (now that I’d love to see). While these are still in production, I can’t imagine spare parts or magazines are easy to find. I don’t think that’ll dissuade anyone who’s in the market for something like this.
The FAMAE SAF certainly has its place in history, but what’s that piece of history worth? We certainly know this gun will sell thanks to the no reserve placed on the auction. But that doesn’t answer the underlying question we’ve all come here to answer. So and always I leave it up to you, the reader, to decide.
