Police investigating multiple carjackings in New Jersey opened fire, killing a suspected thief behind the wheel of a stolen car, law enforcement sources said.
Sources involved in the case said police were checking out reported carjackings in Paterson near Van Houten Street and Straight Street Monday afternoon. Officers tracked down the suspect, and shots were fired soon after police arrived at the scene.
The area was closed off with caution tape after 5 p.m. as investigators worked the scene. It was not clear what prompted police to open fire.
The suspect, who investigators have not identified, died from his injuries. No further information was released regarding the shooting.
At the crime scene that spanned several blocks, a black Acura was seen smashed into the side of a red Toyota, with several other cars left behind on the street in front of busy stores. It was not clear how many of the other vehicles were involved, or if any other individuals were hurt.
The New Jersey Attorney General’s Office will lead the investigation.
