Two Brothers Arrested for Fatal Shooting of Chicago Police Officer Ella French, Critically Wounding Another

Two brothers have been arrested for the fatal shooting of Chicago Police Officer Ella French and critically wounding another officer.

A woman who was in the car with them and fled the scene has not been charged at this time.

CBS News reports that Emonte Morgan, aka Monte Morgan, 21, is charged with First Degree Murder of a Peace Officer, Attempted First Degree Murder of a Peace Officer (two counts), Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon, and Unlawful Use of a Weapon by a Felon. Emonte Morgan pleaded guilty to a robbery charge filed in 2019 and sentenced to probation.

His brother, Eric Morgan, 22, is charged with Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon, Unlawful Use of a Weapon by a Felon, and Obstruction of Justice.

“A third individual, Jamal Danzy, 29, has been charged by the U.S. Attorney’s office with federal firearm violations. He is accused of buying the weapon and then providing the gun Eric Morgan, who Danzy knew was a felon and not allowed to buy a weapon himself,” the report states.

The officers were shot after pulling over the Morgans’ car in West Englewood on Saturday.

French had just returned from maternity leave and was the mother of a two month old baby.

Dozens of Chicago cops turned their backs to Mayor Lori Lightfoot at the University of Chicago Medical Center after the two officers were shot.

The Chicago Sun Times reports that “Lightfoot tried to talk to the male officer’s father, who himself is a retired Chicago police officer. He clearly wanted nothing to do with Lightfoot, according to two sources who were there.”

“The father excoriated the mayor and blamed her for what had happened. One source said Lightfoot handled herself well as the father yelled at her. She listened and treated him with respect,” the report continues. “It was then suggested that Lightfoot say a few words to nearby grieving officers, but as she approached, they all walked away from her and to the other side of a bank of chairs — and turned their backs, the sources said.”

“The police officers’ decision to turn their backs on the mayor while waiting with the family on the 7th floor was significant,” FOP President John Catanzara told the paper. “Turning their backs on the mayor was an excellent example of how the hundreds of police officers felt waiting outside the hospital.”

“They have had enough and are no longer going to remain silent anymore.”
