A Syrian rebel who’s famous for ‘taking out more than 140 of Assad’s tanks’ has volunteered to fight in Ukraine.
Suheil al-Hammoud, otherwise known as ‘Abu Tow’, reportedly took out the President of Syria’s tanks with ‘American anti-tank missiles’.
He is a Free Syrian Army rebel famed for his skill in operating the BGM-71 TOW anti-tank missile during the Syrian Civil War.
With regards to Vladimir Putin‘s invasion of Ukraine, the country has called upon anyone who is able to take up arms in Russian resistance, and has banned men between the ages of 18 to 60 years old from leaving the country.
On Saturday (25 February) the famed rebel took to Twitter and wrote: “How can I go to Ukraine and fight alongside the Ukrainian army Is there a way I’m ready.”
An official statement from the Commander of the Troop Forces, Yuri Galushkin, read: “Today Ukraine needs everything.
“All procedures for joining TPO are simplified.
“Carry only your passport and identification code.
“There are no age restrictions.
“If you have problems on the ground, please refer to this official statement.”
In a 2021 interview with Calibre Obscura, Abu Tow said: “I was the top gunner in the Special Forces training before defecting in 27 March, 2012.
“After defecting, I joined ‘Syria Revolutionaries Front’, of FSA, which was the biggest faction, then, in my region, Jabal Al-Zawiyah.
“There were no ATGMs at the beginning of the revolution, or very few of.
“Hence, I participated as a storming soldier and my first battle was storming and liberating Khan Tuman depots in the southern countryside of Aleppo, where I got my first injury.
“After liberating ‘the 46th Regiment’ where I was serving before the revolution, and seizing Malyutka missiles I found, and before defecting and seizing Malyutka Missiles (as ghanimah).
“I found in the arsenal the missiles and the base with my name written on, as I had used to fire the six missiles before the revolution in projects for the army, all of them were successful.
He added: “I participated in most of the battles: Aleppo, the coast, Hama countryside, Idlib, in more than 9000 war hours since I have joined FSA until nowadays.”
