The Democrats could soon lose another senator.
After Arizona Senator Sinema changed her registration from Democrat to Independent, people are asking West Virginia Senator Manchin if he’ll do the same.
Just asked Joe Manchin if he may become an independent like Sinema did. “I’ll look at all of these things. I’ve always looked at all those things but I have no intention of doing anything right now. Whether I do something later, I can’t tell you what the future is going to bring”
Manchin: “I’m not a Washington Democrat. I don’t know what else to tell you. … And if a Washington independent is — we’ll see what happens there. We’ll have to look. People are registering more for independent than any other party affiliation, they are sick and tired of it.”
This should be a lay-up for GOP Leader McConnell.
Why doesn’t McConnell make an offer to Manchin and take power in the Senate?
Things are so bad for Senate Democrats that they are struggling to fill the key role of Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee chair.
Sen. Kyrsten Sinema’s decision to drop her Democratic party affiliation and register as an independent has made the job of Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee chair even more difficult. The only thing harder than protecting Democrats’ 51-seat majority during the 2024 election cycle might be finding a senator willing to take on the job.
…
The search has become a struggle for reasons both obvious and obscure. The DSCC chair could have to navigate divisive and ideological intraparty fights in both Arizona and California. The growth in online fundraising has made the connections to big donors that come with the job less valuable than in the past. More than half of the party’s senators are up for reelection or are members of Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer’s (N.Y.) ever-expanding leadership team.
But more than anything, the brutality of the map Democrats are facing would discourage any glory-seeking politician.
What is McConnell waiting for?
