Arizona Republican gubernatorial Kari Lake’s headquarters was shut down after “white suspicious powder” was sent to her campaign headquarters.
The suspicious substance garnered an immediate response from local law enforcement agencies which included a hazmat team and a bomb squad.
One of Kari Lake’s staffers was exposed to the substance but hasn’t reported any symptoms as of yet.
A report by the Daily Mail included that the suspicious white substance was contained in a letter that has abusive rhetoric inside.
An email by Sgt. Phil Krynsky stated “When officers arrived, they learned there were suspicious items located inside the mail. Additional resources responded to collect the items and secure the area. There have been no reports of injury and the investigation remains active.”
The substance was found initially on Saturday night and police have placed the headquarters under investigation since then.
Lake’s campaign staffers have deemed the incident as a terroristic attack against Lake, and the threat is being used to intimidate her before the election.
As of now there is no named suspect and is still under investigation by local law enforcement and the FBI.
Kari Lake released a full statement following the incident via CNN:
Yesterday, a member of the Kari Lake staff opened an envelope delivered to our campaign office that contained suspicious white powder.
It was one of two envelopes that were confiscated by law enforcement and sent to professionals at Quantico for examination, and we are awaiting details. The staff member is currently under medical supervision.
Just two days before Election Day, our campaign headquarters remains shut down. We look forward to law enforcement completing their investigation as quickly as possible. Rest assured, we are taking this security threat incredibly seriously and we are thankful for the Phoenix PD, FBI, first responders, bomb squad, and HazMat crews that responded to this incident. In the meantime, know that our resolve has never been higher and we cannot be intimidated.
We continue to push full speed ahead to win this election on Tuesday.
This is a developing story. We will update this story as we learn more.
