Boom! Democrat Senators Manchin and Sinema Say They Will Not Kill the Filibuster Over Abortion Vote

Democrat Senators Joe Manchin and Kryrsten Sinema

On Monday night news broke that the US Supreme Court reportedly moved to END Roe v Wade in a DRAFT OPINION by Justice Samuel Alito. The draft opinion was leaked to Politico by a likely Supreme Court clerk.

The draft opinion was leaked to the press – something that was highly unusual – in an attempt to switch the vote before it was announced.

Democrats responded as expected. Bernie Sanders called to end the Senate filibuster in order to pass legislation and to make abortion the law of the land.

But it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen.

Already, moderate Democrat Senators Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema said they will not kill the filibuster.
Sorry, Bernie.

The Daily Mail reported:

Moderate Democrat Sens. Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema are standing firm in support of the filibuster, resisting President Biden’s call for Congress to codify abortion rights and calls from within their party to abolish the 60-vote hurdle.

‘The filibuster is a protection of democracy,’ Manchin, D-W.Va., told reporters when pressed about calls to codify abortion rights after a leaked draft Supreme Court opinion revealed a majority of justices were in favor of reversing Roe v. Wade.

A spokesperson for Sinema, D-Ariz., said that the filibuster was ‘more important than ever,’ citing seven times in the past it had protected against abortion rights infringements.

‘Protections in the Senate safeguarding against the erosion of women’s access to health care have been used half-a-dozen times in the past 10 years, and are more important now than ever,’ the Sinema spokesperson told Axios.

‘A woman’s health care choices should be between her, her family, and her doctor. Overturning Roe v. Wade endangers the health and wellbeing of women in Arizona and across America,’ she added.

Even without the filibuster, Democrats likely wouldn’t have the votes to codify abortion rights.
