TFB Podcast Roundup 44: Miami Shootout and Old Guns

Welcome to TFB Podcast Roundup 44. Podcasting and listening to podcasts have exposed me to many new ideas within the firearms world. Big names like Tom Gresham have some pretty lengthy podcasts that are always a welcome notification when I find myself on 2+ hour long flights. Although I may not stay awake for the entire run of some of these shows, I’ve still managed to absorb some of the information that is being spoken to me in my semi-lucid hours, and once again, I’m just grateful that there is a lot of good gun content out there from people who are more experienced, more educated, and more articulate than I am when it comes to firearms and their litany of uses. This week I’ve gathered a few new episodes from some of our most frequented podcasts as well as a completely new one from the guys over at the Old School Guns Podcast. As always, sit back, relax, and enjoy some good old firearms listening.

Student of the Gun Radio 1138 – Free Crack Pipes & More Miami Shootout Lessons

Length: 98 Minutes

Although the main read of the title is pretty heavily political, what actually caught my attention was the bit at the end about Miami Shootout Lessons. Some of you will know that I did a brief writeup on the progression of events and the firearms used in the infamous Miami Dade shootout, if you’re interested in that you can read the article here, but what is discussed in this podcast is more nuanced and takes a look at what agencies did to change up their game after the shootout took place and what lessons we can glean from that.

Old School Guns: Episode 139

Length: 67 Minutes

Old School Guns focuses on the gun culture which includes critiques of the gun media, 2A and political commentary, and questions and answers.

Archive reduction, Why I don’t do gear reviews, too many cartridges, Boomer insults, Bear attacks, Hunting declining, Dog retrieval, Match and target designations, Double spinner, best and worst revolvers, 357 magnum really better, sporting rifle comeback, M9 trash, CMP quality

I really like the speed and cadence that our host has as well as the absolutely brutal honesty he dishes out on the show. In this episode, he talks a bit about why he doesn’t actually do gear reviews and I think his sentiment is something that TFBTV presenter Hop can identify with. This is nice, easy and honest listening and I think I’ve found a new podcast to frequent.

Handgun World Podcast Episode 593 – Teaching a fighter to shoot vs. teaching a shooter to fight – Interview with Jon Payne

Length: 60 Minutes

Shooting and fighting are two entirely different things and just because you’re an expert at one doesn’t mean you are with the other. The guys on the handgun world podcast talk a bit about this today with special guest Jon Payne. Jon Payne is a firearms instructor, who said it is easier to train a fighter to shoot than it is to train a shooter to fight – this is an interesting topic and I think it has brought me a new perspective on self-defense shootings and gunfighting in general.

Gun Talk – Backyard Explosion; Colt and CZ Guns; New Rifles For U.S. Army: Gun Talk Radio | 05.15.22 After Show

Length: 31 Minutes

In this hour: – Jim experiments with backyard trash burning – CZ’s purchase of Colt seems to have gone well – The U.S. Army adopts a new cartridge and two new rifles Tom Gresham’s Gun Talk 05.15.22 After Show

The After Show from Gun Talk is fast becoming one of my favorite segments of the entire Gun Talk podcast. If you’re interested in the new SIG Spear, or its new cartridge, the .277 Fury, this is a good episode to get up to speed on all of the details surrounding the Army’s new rifle and light machine gun.

TFB B-Side Podcast: TANDEMKROSS History with Jake and Bryan

Length: 38 Minutes

Today on the TFB B-Side podcast we invite Jake and Bryan – the founders of TANDEMKROSS to the show to talk about themselves and what their company does. TANDEMKROSS is very well known in the rimfire community for its high-quality aftermarket parts that allow the end user to select a platform they like, and then modify it as they please. Sometimes this means just one part and sometimes this also means nearly an entire gun being adapted and upgraded over time. I’ve been a huge fan of TANDEMKROSS products since I started shooting rimfire steel challenge and since then I’ve come to really appreciate the time and effort both Jake and Bryan have put into their company and their mission of making good guns great. Please welcome Jake and Bryan to the show!
