At the same time, the Australian Defence Department also selected a Sniper Surveillance Capability package, to provide ADF snipers with a day and night capability. The system includes the Safran JIM Compact multispectral surveillance device and Steiner laser range-finding binoculars. In total, the L159 contract is worth $500 million, but note that there’s a lot more than sniper rifles included.
The JIM Compact from Safran offers 3 spectral bands and integrates advanced capabilities like a See-Spot function, Low Light Level identification, real-time photo and video recording and streaming, channels fusion and applications for long-range fires, close air support and artillery. According to the technical specifications, it can range up to 12,000 meters.
