Police are responding to a school shooting that has been described as a “mass casualty event” at Heritage High School in Newport News, Virginia.
Most agencies consider an incident a “mass casualty event” when there are at least four victims.

Students were seen running from the school and are being evacuated to the tennis courts where parents can go pick them up. It is unclear if there are still students inside the building.
There are reports on social media about multiple casualties, but the police have not confirmed any numbers at this time.

WJHL reports that “Officer Brandon Maynard could not confirm additional details as of 12:20 p.m. but said officers were gathering more information.”
The Achievable Dream Academy nearby has also been placed on lockdown.
It is unclear if the shooter is still at large.
