Raccoons are definitely some of the coolest and most interesting animals out there, but only if they aren’t causing problems on your property.

They are relentless break-in artists when it comes to garbage cans, pet food, chicken coops, and more and if you get a large troop of them hanging around you’re bound to have issues. Those issues will turn into a legitimate nightmare if they get inside your attic or elsewhere in your home.

And when it comes to home invasion, raccoons typically find their way in off of the roof, sneaking in through soffits, attic vents, chimneys, and more. Accordingly, if you have one on your roof you need to get it down from there and scare it away, and hopefully not break your neck in the process.

To help you do that I’m bringing you a list of tips that will help you scare raccoons off of your roof easily, in addition to using baits and traps which I’ve already covered. Keep reading and we will get right to it…

How Do Raccoons Get On Roofs?

It’s not unheard of to see a raccoon in the daytime, but they’re predominantly nocturnal. Being prey animals, being illuminated and exposed raises their levels of anxiety, and might cause them to retreat to cover wherever they are.

You can use this quirk of psychology against them by employing motion lighting around your home and, if necessary, up on your roof that will activate when raccoons come near. Lacking that, spotlight them with a powerful flashlight if you are out on “patrol.”

Even though raccoons are often urbanized, a term meaning that they have learned to live near and alongside human habitation and activity, they’re still startled and unnerved by loud noises. Raise enough ruckus, and a raccoon might decide that discretion is the better part of valor and hit the trail.

To do this, you can yell, bang sticks or boards together, rattle a trash can lid, or use a pail full of gravel. Anything that will create a sharp, loud sound might be enough to spook them away.

Just pay attention, because if they duck inside your house, you’ll have to try a new tactic to get them out!

Garden twirlers are those wind-powered decorations that take the form of pinwheels, spirals, or concentric rings of reflective discs.

Whatever they are and whatever they look like, if you get some that are a bright, shiny reflective metal you might be able to rely on them to keep raccoons and other mammals away.

There’s something about the glint and movement of these things that just unsettles most animals.

Being so unsure of what they are, most raccoons will choose to take their chances elsewhere. Hang these up strategically around your home and especially near the known approaches that raccoons use to scamper up to your roof. Hopefully it will deter them!

One of the oldest and best-known methods for deterring raccoons, mice, rats and other varmints is the use of mothballs. Chances are this is what your great-granddad did to keep pesky critters at bay, and if it’s good enough for him it’s good enough for us…

Mothballs have that strong, nose-stinging odor because of a compound called naphthalene. It’s deadly to moths, but merely a strong deterrent to animals with sensitive noses. Animals like raccoons!

All you need to do is place mothballs at strategic points around the foundation of your property, especially near spots where raccoons like to climb up to the roof.

Placing a few up at the roof line by tucking them under shingles is also a good idea, as is putting them inside the attic near vents and other potential entrances. They don’t last forever, and you’ll have to replace them occasionally (and sooner after it rains), but this is one of the cheapest and best options.

This is another one of my favorite and time-tested raccoon repellents, and one that I didn’t know about until just recently.

To us humans, Epsom salt doesn’t really have any odor at all, but for whatever reason the chemical composition of the stuff is intolerable to many mammals. I can guarantee you that raccoons positively hate it!

Even better, the smell seems to drift for quite a long distance, so putting rings of Epsom salt around your home and elsewhere on your property might keep raccoons off of your land entirely.

The best part is Epsom salt is cheap, freely available, and pretty friendly, environmentally speaking- though you don’t want it to get into the soil where you plan on growing anything!

Remember to refresh it periodically as it degrades and washes away.

Raccoons, as mentioned, have incredibly sensitive noses. They are sensitive both in terms of overall efficiency at sniffing out food, mates, and threats, but also in their vulnerability to irritants.

Pepper is delicious on our own food, but if you’ve ever gotten a nose full of the stuff you know how unpleasant it can be! Imagine how much worse it’ll be for a raccoon.

Grind this stuff up fresh and then sprinkle it literally wherever you know raccoons go and move around.

Once they get a good snoutful of stuff it is going to send them into a coughing and sneezing fit, and after one or two close encounters they will probably associate your home and roof with pain, and leave you alone.

Red pepper flakes work very much like black pepper and white pepper when it comes to repelling raccoons from your roof. Any raccoon that runs into the stuff and either tries a taste or gets a good whiff of it is going to be in for a searing surprise.

Even though the compound contained in red pepper flakes, and all other spicy peppers, causes mammals significant pain when it comes into contact with skin, mucous membranes, taste buds, or eyes, it isn’t overtly harmful.

This is really going to knock any trespassing raccoon for a loop, but it will leave them no worse for the wear after the effects subside in half an hour or so.

Best of all, this is another extremely cheap and environmentally friendly option: you won’t have to worry about this hurting the environment, your land, or any materials on your home. Just don’t get it in your own eyes!

Another raccoon repellent that you’ve probably got in your own pantry right now. Sure, it makes our desserts taste wonderful, but this stuff is ferociously irritating to many mammals. Indeed, that flavor we love so much is actually a defense mechanism developed by the plant to prevent it from being eaten!

You probably don’t need me to tell you how to use cinnamon at this point: scatter it liberally anywhere that you know the raccoons will go and be sure to coat all of their approaches and climbing points that they use to get up on your roof.

Grab yourself a big economy jug if you want to, and don’t hesitate to lay a thick perimeter around the edge of your roof so the raccoons will run into it nose-first as they climb.

Raccoons might be notorious predators of chicken and duck coops, but they themselves are prey for larger and more capable animals like wolves, coyotes, bobcats, and more.

Accordingly, they are always alert to any indication that a predator might be nearby, and the number one tool they use to figure that out is their nose.

If a raccoon can physically smell the predator, or even evidence of their passage in the form of urine or droppings, they will be a lot more fearful and more prone to head the other way.

Exploit this predator nervousness by acquiring predator scent from a hunting supply retailer or a pest control outlet.

Note that this stuff can be pretty stinky, obviously, and you probably don’t want to smell it yourself but it works wonderfully for repelling raccoons especially if they are already setting up a nest inside your home.

Most mommy raccoons that are looking for a safe place to nest, like inside your attic for instance, will avoid male, or boar, raccoons because they have a tendency to kill little babies.

Just like we used predator scent above, you can acquire specialty male raccoon scent and use it to scare off any adventurous, exploring females and younger, nervous males from your property and roof.

As usual, spray liberally and reapply often as it wears out. Once you know the raccoons are long gone, you can stop.

Why You Should Invest In A Solar Phone Charger

The Perfect Plan B

As I pointed out already, nearly everyone owns a cell phone or smartphone.

Everyone (from teenagers to grandparents) is getting in on the act.

And as we know, smartphones are so much more than “traditional phones.”

They are a:

• Camera
• GPS device
• Internet browser
• Video game console
• Recording device
• Music player
• Etc.

But these technical devices require copious amounts of power to operate – all while on the go.

So they’re designed with a rechargeable battery.

But those batteries run out way too fast – often at inconvenient times and locations.

You know, those remote places without access to electrical outlets.

In the past, you just had to accept that and deal with the consequences.

For example:

• Maybe you lost your GPS mid-travel and had no map. Oops.
• Or perhaps you wanted to capture a special moment only to find your phone dead – missing out on the perfect picture.
• Or worse yet, what about if you got lost in the wilderness with no way to call for help...

But with a solar charger, you can get that phone back up and running – ANYWHERE.

So a solar phone charger act as a power backup for normal times and a lifesaver device in times of dire emergency.

Save Some Money

If you use your solar phone charger often, it will save you some money over an extended period of time.

Now, it depends on how much you spend upfront on the solar charger.

Using the sun’s “free” energy is great, but it’s not “savings” if the cost of the device is prohibitive.

But, as solar phone charger prices fall and your electric rates rise, you can save real money.

We’re not quite there yet to fully offset the device’s original cost (at least not quickly).

However, a solar charger can still help offset much of your initial investment.

For example, let’s say it costs you $25 for the charger, and you use it often (daily).

Let’s say you saved $1 in electricity each month by using a solar phone charger often instead of plugging it into your home’s outlet.

That math would add up to $12 per year.

No, $12 won’t make you rich. But the device you buy today slowly pays for itself little by little over time.

This is what I like to call a B.T.N. investment = Better Than Nothing

Environmentally Friendly

If you’re someone who wants to reduce your carbon footprint, then this is a no-brainer.

Harnessing the sun’s power to keep your phone charged helps offset your carbon footprint.

Now, there is a carbon cost to manufacture the device in the first place – so it might not be 100% “carbon” friendly.

However, it’s better at offsetting carbon than all the other survival gadgets you buy yearly.

3 Types Of Solar Phone Chargers On The Market

There are hundreds of solar charging solutions on the market today.

They are designed to keep your phone powered – whether at the beach, while camping, or in an emergency.

And while each design has its own small twist. Solar-powered phone chargers tend to fall into one of three categories.

1. Direct (no battery bank)
2. Indirect (has a battery bank)
3. Case Chargers (no battery bank)

Choosing the right one depends on how you plan to use it – and how you use your phone.

A direct charger makes things simple and efficient.

They are the best solution if you plan to be in one place during the day and aren’t on your phone all the time.

A battery bank charger is best if you need to be on the go.

For example, if you can’t stop to charge your phone until you’re back home.

And if you can’t be bothered with packing extra gear, you might want a case charger.

It automatically extends your phone’s battery life when you’re not using it.

But that’s just a quick rundown.

Let’s now deep dive into each solution a bit more.

That way, you can zero in on the solution that will work best for you.

Direct Chargers

Direct solar phone chargers are often called solar panel phone chargers.

They connect straight from a solar panel directly to your phone via a USB cable.

The USB connection offers a simple way to connect your phone to the panel with the charging cable.

A solar panel phone charger is also the most efficient form of solar charging.

That’s because you lose some efficiency whenever electricity is transferred between components.

Each transfer step has a small efficiency cost due to resistance.

These transfers add up and erode the total charge available to your phone.

So, if you choose a direct panel solution, you remove these transfer losses.

Helping you maximize the amount of charge reaching your phone.

Direct panel chargers also include only a few internal parts and minimal, delicate circuitry.

Helping to make them far more robust and weather-resistant compared to other options.

This comes in handy when you can’t always count on the weather to be clear.

Of course, direct charging from a solar panel also has a few drawbacks.

First, solar panels have difficulty producing a consistent flow of electricity.

Variables (such as clouds, shadows, etc.) create stronger and weaker signals over time.

This translates to slower charging and longer wait times as your devices charge.

During this time, your phone must stay connected to the solar charger for longer to reach a full charge.

So if you have a large solar panel, you’re basically tethered to one location.

This makes it harder and less convenient to use.

For example, a single full charge could take up to 5 hours of full sun.

This means re-aiming the panel often to collect the most energetic rays throughout the day.

Second, the power output of a solar panel is directly related to the amount of incoming sunlight.

This means that the voltage levels will fluctuate throughout the day – and even in passing clouds.

Clearly, this means more power in full, bright sunlight, and your phone will charge faster.

But, in low light conditions, your charger may not charge enough to register on your phone.

Modern phones may stop charging if it senses electrical variations in the voltage.

They do this to protect the phone when power surges at home.

But it can also prevent you from charging via solar panels if the output is too unpredictable.

Have you ever seen the “This device is not supported” message when using a cheap charger?

This is because the cheap chargers are too variable, and some phones don’t like them.

Finally, the old criticism of “what about when it’s dark out?” applies here.

With a direct charger, you can only charge during daylight hours.

If you’re on the move or have bad weather during the day, this can damage your charging capabilities.

Solar Battery Banks

If the headaches of direct charging are too much to deal with, a solar charger with a battery bank solar charger may be the better bet.

Adding a high-capacity external battery solves several flaws of direct charging solar systems.

Battery banks are commonplace these days, with capacities of up to 20,000mAh.

This is more than enough to charge your phone several times over.

This can really be a lifesaver when you only have opportunities to collect a solar charge every few days.

They also allow you to leave home at full charge.

In addition to high-capacity batteries, they also have high-quality charging circuits.

Circuitry that’s far less sensitive to voltage fluctuations.

This means they will charge far better in partly cloudy conditions and at low light.

Allowing you to collect more power than a direct system.

Maybe most importantly, battery banks mean you can charge where and when it’s convenient.

You can charge the battery bank all day while going about your business.

Then later, use it to charge your phone overnight (or whenever is most convenient).

Meaning you can wake up to a full phone battery and get more done throughout the day.

On the other hand, a battery bank DOES mean one more device added between the sun and your phone.

As we mentioned earlier, this also means suffering a bit more transfer loss along the way.

A quality battery bank will minimize that loss and more than makeup for it in available power.

Best Inflatable Fishing Boats (By Type)

The market for inflatable fishing boats is growing fast.

This is great, but all those options come with much confusion.

There seem to be as many inflatable fishing boat options as there are fishermen.

But the right inflatable fishing boat for you depends on several factors:

• The type of water (pond, lake, river, ocean)
• The fishing technique (bobber, casting, fly)
• Group size (single, family)
• Kind of fish (catfish, bluegill, bass)

Float Tube Fishing Boat

A float tube is a great option when fishing solo in flat water or gentle streams.

Float tube models range from a covered inner tube to a more modern U-shaped tube.

This design offers a wide range of seat options, rod and gear storage, and safety features.

In this inflatable fishing boat, you sit up to your waist in the water in a seat suspended inside the tubes.

Since much of your body is in the water the whole time, a float tube is best for warm waters.

However, cooler water fishing is possible if you wear waders with the float tube.

Float tubes are among the lightest and most portable fishing inflatables.

Making them popular among fishermen in backcountry lakes.

One drawback of the float tube -you propel the boat by kicking your feet.

This leaves you with limited maneuverability.

Any current can make things a real challenge, and expect slow progress in calm waters.

However, they can work well as an inflatable fly fishing boat if you tend to frequent calm waters.

Stand-Up Paddleboard Fishing Boat

Yes, you can fish from a stand-up paddleboard (SUP).

But you must have an exceptional balance to pull off the feat.

For those gifted individuals, the SUP provides lightweight, portable fishing.

Nearly as much as a float tube.

But these options provide some real advantages over a float tube.

It gives you a higher viewpoint, better propulsion, and less contact with the water (if you don’t fall off)!

Some SUPs come with rod holders, while others rely on accessory rod holders.

It’s popular to have a small waterproof deck bag on the nose of the board for gear, keys, etc.

SUPs are great for flat water.

But, some designs are made for rivers, with shorter, more maneuverable shapes.

Sit On Top Kayak Fishing Boat

One of the best kayak styles for fishing is a sit-on-top.

This type of inflatable fishing boat has the distinct advantage of being able to recover if you tip over.

That’s because the boat has no real “interior.”

Just flip a sit-on-top upright and climb back inside without bailing water.

For those new to kayaking, this makes it far easier to feel confident since you can self-rescue if something happens on the water.

They’re also more maneuverable than float tubes or SUPs, especially in river waters.

But they’re not designed for intense rapids.

The main drawback being you’re in constant, direct contact with water.

So cold water fishing can be uncomfortable without a wetsuit.

But, for warm water and gentle river fishing, you won’t do much better than a sit-on-top kayak!

Sit Inside Kayak Fishing Boat

If your fishing trends more towards rivers and some rapids, a sit-inside kayak is a great solution.

Some sit-inside boats are designed with a self-bailing floor.

These can shed water after capsizing.

This makes it easier to get back inside and under control after capsizing.

They’re usually more stable than other kayaks since the paddler sits lower in the boat.

It also has higher sides and more floatation for whitewater making them great as inflatable fly fishing boats as well.

Inflatable Fishing Pontoon Boats

This is a hybrid between a catamaran and a whitewater raft.

A pontoon is a GREAT option for fishing while on your next whitewater adventure!

The wide stance of the cataraft provides a considerable amount of stability.

And the rowing frame allows for exceptional maneuverability and lots of gear storage.

Often enough storage for overnight camping gear.

Many come with accessory bags and even coolers and dry boxes!

Cataracts are bulky. They also cost more than other inflatable fishing boats.

But for the right person, the benefits far outweigh these concerns.

A cataract sits above the water.

This makes it ideal for all water temps and most whitewater conditions.

They’re also far more comfortable for the rower than other inflatables since they include a well-supported seat and footrests for leverage.

Some inflatable fishing pontoon boats even come with an anchor!

That way, you can position yourself for excellent fishing, even in a strong current.

Raft Fishing Boat

Finding a small inflatable that fits everyone is difficult if you’re fishing with more than one person.

You have to get a bit larger at this point, and the choice often leads to rafts.

Unfortunately, rafts tend to be the most variable in construction and durability.

From cheap inflatable fishing boats (in the sub-$100 range) to whitewater rafts costing over $5000.

You can find different rafts at nearly any price point.

Many lower-price rafts may suit your needs on a calm lake for a few summer days.

If you spend weeks every year on rougher waters, you’ll find durability issues on the lower end of the spectrum.

In this case, you’ll want to upgrade to a whitewater raft with a rowing frame.

You can even get a fishing platform frame for many of the specialty whitewater rafts.

These specialty rafts provide balance and a stable platform for casting and fighting.

These higher-end rafts also come at a weight cost.

One of the most important reasons for getting an inflatable fishing boat in the first place.

But they can still make sense for the right person; consider that before you get one.

Finally, there are inflatable dinghies if you need extreme power propulsion.

This is an excellent option for larger lakes and coastal waters.

These inflatables are designed to hold a small to medium outboard motor on a rigid transom.

Many also include a reinforced floor, solid thwarts, and seats.

Plus, some have full oarlocks for rowing in close quarters or if you run out of gas.

Dinghies keep the occupants relatively dry – far more so than most inflatables.

This alone makes them the best bet for cold, coastal ocean waters.

Many designs also feature several grip points and rope handles,

These help swimmers get back into the boat in an emergency.

Inflatable dinghy designs rarely seem to have fishing-specific features.

However, most support accessory rod holders and other add-ons.

Due to their agility in harbors, inflatable dinghies are the favorite tenders for sailboats.

They can land and launch from all but the steepest beaches, which can be helpful in an emergency.

What Is An Inflatable Fishing Boat?

An inflatable fishing boat is fairly simple but comes in many shapes, forms, and sizes.

Some are glorified innertubes. Others have a nice set of oars.

While some can support a small outboard motor.

For example, there are:

• Float Tubes
• Stand-Up Paddle Boards
• Sit On Top Kayaks
• Sit Inside Kayaks
• Small Pontoon Boats
• Rafts
• Dinghys

These are all inflatable boats, but as you can tell, they are very different in design.

As long as it is a boat that you fill up with air – it’s considered inflatable (no matter the design).

However, for it to be an inflatable fishing boat, it must also have design features with fishermen in mind.

The truth is, you can fish in anything from an old inner tube to a fully rigged whitewater raft.

So that’s what an inflatable fishing boat is – an inflatable boat made for fishing.

5 Reasons To Get An Inflatable Fishing Boat

When I was a kid, our fishing options were limited.

We could fish from the bank or drag our old aluminum Jon boat from the barn out to the pond.

And if our aspirations took us farther than the farm pond, we had to get help.

It took at least two strong adults to lift the boat to the top of my parent’s minivan and strap it down for the ride.

Once we arrived, it was time to wrestle the boat out to the water.

By the time we finished loading and launching, we’d made enough noise to scare all the fish in the lake.

Every time, I thought,

“There must be a better way!”

The past few summers, I’ve been doing my fishing from inflatable fishing boats.

1. Lightweight & Portable

The most obvious reason is the lightweight and portable construction.

No more struggling to get a small aluminum fishing boat out of the garage.

Imagine carrying a package the size of a large duffle bag to the next fishing hole.

STOP wrestling a Jon boat on top of the car.

Just toss that duffle bag into the trunk with your survival tent and other weekend camping gear; easy!

And if you’re into survival and preparedness, you can put your inflatable boat in your bug-out vehicle.

No separate trailer is necessary.

2. Skip The Busy Boat Ramp

Speaking of traveling, they make driving far easier and keep your boat safer during travel.

SKIP the busy parking at a boat ramp.

No more waiting for your turn to get down to the water.

Instead, go straight to the beach with your pump and get started!

Never waste an hour (or more) in the parking lot again; get fishing within minutes of arrival.

3. Gain Your Driveway / Garage Space Back

A conventional fishing boat takes up a lot of storage space between fishing trips.

Inflatable fishing boats can pack down to a size that fits under the bed, in a spare closet, or on a shelf in the garage.

This means you can stop filling your driveway, garage, or even a portable garage with a boat and trailer.

Even apartment dwellers can have a fishing boat at ready for a weekend trip to the lake!

4. They Don’t Scare The Fish Away

Lastly, there’s one benefit a lot of people overlook.

Inflatable fishing boats are QUIET!

If you drop something in the bottom of an aluminum boat, every fish in the lake will hear that bang.

Some fish easily startle.

Any unexpected noise can cause them to stop biting and seek calmer, quieter areas.

But, if you drop something in an inflatable fishing boat, it quietly bounces.

The same goes for any rocks or logs you happen to bump into – no loud bang, just a gentle bounce.

5. Very Affordable (especially for a fishing boat)

Lastly, most inflatables are much less expensive than conventional fishing boats.

If you’re getting into boat fishing, it’s hard to justify the cost of a $15,000 bass boat.

But there are inflatable options for nearly every budget.

Best Inflatable Fishing Boat Features

There are some specific features common to fishing inflatables.

Understanding these features will help you narrow down your choices.

On-Board Storage

Every regular fisherman knows fishing takes knowledge, patience, and proper gear.

Sure, you can get away with a single rod, line, hook, and worm. But you increase your chances of success with more options.

Local bait shops understand this.

That’s why they offer thousands of different fishing options:

• Rods (various lengths and rod strength)
• Line (different test weights, materials)
• Bait/Hooks (catfish bait, live bait, artificial bait)
• Tools (plyers, live wells, etc.)

Even the fly-fishing purists can get loaded down with gear.

They fill all their vest pockets with flies, line clippers, and other odds and ends.

Managing all this gear in a boat can be a challenge.

So the best fishing inflatables have storage built into the boat.

At the very least, rod holders keep your expensive rods and reels clear of the oars.

And they also allow you to have a troll line out as you paddle.

Extra zipper compartments are great for small items.

While a roll-top drybag or watertight box can keep your keys, wallet, and camera safe.

You’ll also want to have room for an emergency survival kit and key survival gear.

Especially if you plan to fish alone in the remote wilderness.

Stability

Fighting an active fish is far easier if you can stand up and move around a bit.

For this reason, better inflatables are designed for stability.

This often means a broader beam to prevent a sideways roll.

This stability allows you to shift your weight from one edge to another without capsizing.

It can also mean the boat paddles slightly slower than a narrower profile boat.

But it’s a price most fishermen gladly pay to avoid falling into the drink while fighting their catch.

Maneuverability

Maneuvering the boat quickly can help in many situations when you’re out on the water.

Generally, a shorter-length boat will turn more rapidly and with less effort.

This allows you to slip around trees and work your way through twisting channels in the weeds in calm lakes.

Or it can help you dodge rocks and strainers if you choose to fish in whitewater rivers.

Without a doubt, shorter boats can’t reach the same speeds as longer boats.

But being able to steer clear of obstacles – saves you from an unexpected swim!

Durability

The vinyl used in discount stores for inflatable boats is incredibly thin.

The material struggles to stand up to fishing excursions.

Hooks, fish spines, sharp rocks, and even the gravel on a launchpad can spell disaster for those weak materials.

The best fishing inflatables are made of heavy-duty materials.

They are often reinforced with fabric to withstand the abuse of fishing.

Yet, even so, compared to an aluminum boat, you must treat an inflatable boat with a bit more caution.

So avoid dropping, dragging, slamming, beating, or kicking your inflatable like you can a Jon boat.

And while they are not as indestructible as aluminum boats, they will last with a bit of care.

Also, keep a patch kit handy, just in case, especially if your favorite fishing hole happens to have lots of sharp rocks or submerged logs.

These obstacles can poke a hole at an inopportune time.

Final Thoughts

Inflatable fishing boats have made considerable advances in the past few years.

They’re moving from a novelty fishing option to an excellent tool for all serious fishermen.

Their lower cost, lightweight design, and compact storage make them attractive.

Just make sure you have a good pump!

How To Use A Ferro Rod The Right Way

The first order of business (as with any fire) is to get your tinder in order.

Ensure you have a small pile of dry twigs, bark, grass, or cotton.

Now situate your tinder so there’s plenty of air underneath and throughout.

That way, when the sparks touch the tinder, there’s enough oxygen to produce a flame.

Once your tinder bundle is ready, hold the rod and the striker in one hand.

Next, place the end of it right underneath (or against) your tinder pile.

Angle the striker at 45 degrees and drag it forcefully and quickly along the rod’s length.

Great, bright sparks will erupt from the friction between the two pieces of metal.

Direct the hot sparks straight into your tinder pile.

The more sparks land within the tinder, the hotter it will get, and the faster a flame will manifest.

When you notice smoke coming from your tinder pile, STOP, bend and blow gently into your tinder bundle.

The air from your lungs should nurture the spark burning within the tinder into a growing flame.

Be careful not to blow too hard because you can accidentally blow out your hard-earned flame!

Once the fire has a life of its own, start piling larger sticks and logs on top until you have a roaring bonfire.

What Is A Ferrocerium Rod Anyway?

You need to understand what it is made of to understand what it is.

So, allow me to introduce you to Ferrocerium.

↓ What is Ferrocerium?

Ferrocerium is like flint – but it’s not like flint at all.

Chemically, ferrocerium, the metal used in the rods, is entirely dissimilar to natural flint rock.

But they do the same thing: generate sparks.

↓ Flint vs. Ferrocerium Definition & History

The main feature of ferrocerium is it produces sparks that burn up to 5500 degrees F!

And can even result in molten globs of metal from the steel striker.

You can strike it using all sorts of dense materials, such as:

• glass shards
• knife spines
• or even flint

Whereas flint is stingy with giving up sparks without steel.

A typical survival Ferrocerium rod consists of three components:

1. The rod itself
2. A striker
3. A small length of string to bind them together

The Ferro rod was invented by the German scientist Carl Auer around 1903.

Since then, they’ve been widely adopted and used throughout the world.

They’ve been used in every modern war and have become embedded in survival culture.

Why? Because they are ideal for the outdoors as a staple survival tool in any scenario.

It’s a specific tool with a specific purpose.

However, they’re not like survival multi-tools that can function to serve a variety of purposes.

They do one thing and do it damn well; they conjure fire.

Why Are They So Awesome

Starting a fire was an epic and important challenge for most human history.

• It was no laughing matter.
• It was serious for survival.

Ancient travelers would carry embers around to combat this challenge.

Why? Because starting a fire with a smoldering ember was far easier than creating a new one.

After all, using stones to knock out a spark IS NOT EASY.

Nor is using a stick to pop an ember out of a wood plank.

Besides, our ancestors could never be certain there would be enough dry fuel (or the right stones) at their next stop.

It was better to carry a smoldering ember along.

So what would ancient people think about a spark-generating device today?

• One that fits in a pocket.
• One that throws off a shower of sparks hot enough to melt steel.
• A device that works with the flick of a wrist (even when soaking wet)

I bet they would have killed for such power!

That would have been life-changing tech back then.

And anyone with access to it would have felt like a survival wizard.

Today we have a variety of fire-starting tools:

• Survival Lighters
• Survival Matches
• Solar Reflectors

But only one type of fire starter works under almost any conditions.

A device that can get a damp bundle of sticks burning like a grease-soaked towel in seconds flat.

Extremely Hot Sparks

You create a spark that burns upwards of 5000 degrees F.

At those temps, anything in its way can melt or ignite easily.

They can even produce these hot sparks when they are soaking wet.

Making them a lot easier to use than the conventional steel-and-flint striker.

Size and Weight

Their size and weight play a lot in their usefulness.

Some are not much bigger than the size of a zipper.

They are lightweight and fit comfortably into a pocket or compartment.

You can even attach one to a keychain, so you always have a method for starting fires.

The bottom line is they are a useful tool for fire starting and a perfect addition to your:

• bug out bag
• survival pack
• get home bag
• tackle box
• glove box
• medical kits
• everyday carry kit
• etc.

Easy To Use

We touched on this earlier, but this tool (once learned) is dead simple to use.

Even without much practice, you can quickly figure out how to use one without much guidance.

It’s a surefire way to bear flames even in the darkest, coldest circumstances.

It’s easy to take fire for granted in a world full of gas-powered stovetops, Bic lighters, and blowtorches.

Other Uses

They’re useful for more than just starting fires.

They also make decent signaling tools in the dark.

The sparks are so hot and bright that they’re like a firecracker.

So if you find yourself lost in the dark, use it as a backup signaling device.

They can help people locate you in the dark.

Creating sparks may seem like a simple technology.

But the purpose it serves is essential to civilization.

I can’t think of a single instance when having one on hand wouldn’t be useful.

How To Make A Ferro Rod

I have good news for those creative souls who want to take DIY into their own hands.

Homemade ones can often function better than those commercially available.

Because you can add whatever you want to it:

• Add a compass to your setup. Sure.
• Stick a little ruler on it? You bet.
• Add a bundle of fishing supplies. Why not!
• Attach it to a knife or a walking staff? Cool.
• Tie on a container full of cotton tinder? Smart.
• Attach a flashlight, a signal mirror, a small folding knife, etc.

Making your own allows you to customize and personalize your survival gear.

First, buy a plain one (like those in the HOODDEAL Rod pack).

Then make your own handle.

Then braid a length of paracord to use to attach the striker to the rod.

A fire has not always been such an accessible resource to come by.

So keep one in your bug-out bag, with your camping gear and survival gear to boost your survival chances.

Granting you the ability to start a fire wherever, whenever, no matter if it is soaking wet and miserable out.

Plus, it has near-mystical power.

Our ancestors would have been utterly blown away by the ability to conjure flames with a rod.

Ferro rods are just freaking useful.

And once you start using one, you won’t understand how you ever felt confident without one.
