HOT GAT or FUDD CRAP? Silver and Gold or Tired and Old?

Welcome everyone to the 183rd edition of ‘Hot Gat or Fudd Crap?’, one of our many series here on TFB. If you’re new to the series, this is where we look at the most obscure firearms that are actually for sale and ask the question – is this Gat a sweet deal or only have Fudd appeal?  Each week the TFB staff weighs in with their thoughts, but readers get the final say in the poll at the bottom of each article.

In our last edition, our poll showed that you, the readers, decided the MPA 5.7 was fudd crap.

HGFC – Grip Reaper or Looks Cheaper? — Poll Results

At this time the original auction remains up with the skull-clad MPA 5.7 still up for grabs.  The votes were closer than expected on this gun, but at this point, we can only hope it finds its way to a new home in the near future.

In this week’s edition of HGFC, we look at a nickel/gold plated Para-Ordnace P14 chambered in .45 ACP. As is tradition, this very shiny gat is currently up for sale on GunBroker with a Starting Bid of $1,749 or $2,500 Buy It Now.

This is a one-of-a-kind Para Ordnance P14-45.  It is being listed as “used” but has had only 25 rounds put through it.   There is no other one like this on Earth – it was custom made, bright nickel plated, with 24K Gold Plated controls.  It had never been fired by the original owner from whom I purchased it – he was a retired Las Vegas Police officer and had it custom made for his collecction.    I only test fired it once – put about 20 rounds through it, so it is in pristine – like-new – condition.  I’ve been shooting and collecting Paras for the past 30 years, and I’ve never seen another one like this – so you’ll probably never find another one like it either.  I cannot find a scratch or blemish on it. It is just as shown in the pictures.

Selling as-pictured, as described, and as-is – no returns.  It comes with one 14-round magazine.

I’ve just had a gunsmith completely customize and tune up the gun’s action, with new recoil spring for high performance and flawless operation.

Not for sale to:  The People’s Republics of:   California, Connecticut, Hawaii, New Jersey, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, Vermont, and also not to Delaware (any State’s voters who would continually re-elect an a-hole like Biden as its Senator, shouldn’t play with sharp instruments).

Don’t email me with offers – this is a one-of-a-kind pristine collectors firearm — it is a work of art.

The Para-Ordnance P14-45 is a very interesting piece of history in its own right.  Designed in the 1980s this was the first improved variant of the 1911 pattern pistol to feature a high-capacity double-stack magazine.  As the name gives away, this brings the original capacity up from just seven rounds to 14 rounds.  Over the years there have been other variants like the P16-40 chambered in 40S&W and the P18-9 chambered in 9mm, but this was the original.

In true 1911 fashion, you’ll often find there are three very different markets for 1911s.  Typically you’ll see entry-level guns, mid-tier offerings, and then guns that cost as much as a used car.  While these guns weren’t exactly the most expensive now or then, I don’t know if this limited design warranted this much silver and gold plating.  It is certainly a cool piece of history, but also not a modern 2011 or custom shop gun I’d expect would have this much bling.  But of course, to each, their own, and beauty is generally in the eye of the beholder.

What do you think of this P14-45?  Is it worth it for the price given the pedigree and features, or are you more inclined to spend your money on something a little more traditional?  As always I leave it up to you, the readers, to decide.
