Field Tested: The Rux 70-Liter Container

Outdoor adventuring for our family requires some careful planning in order to make adequate use of limited space. We need to be able to put most of our gear in the bed of our truck, it has to be packed in a way that can handle the elements, and it needs to be accessible along the way. We want to get things packed up quickly and get our adventures started, not spend hours working out the right organization and then stacking situations in the back of the truck. I have been waiting for something to ease that packing frustration. Enter the Rux, a thoughtfully designed container box using bistable steel corner stays, waterproof-coated nylon, adjustable climbing grade 20-millimeter nylon webbing handles, and quick-release buckles. The Rux also features versatile utility rails, and the EVA foam lid can double as a seat pad or changing mat. It’s fully collapsible as well as slat-wall compatible, making it super convenient to use and store.

The first time we used the Rux, we stored our dry foods and pantry items for a weekend camping trip. Sharing good food is one of the most important parts of our adventures, whether we are at home or in the middle of nowhere. We work hard to consider not only the preparation and packing, but also the ease of making nutritious and delicious meals without bringing our entire home kitchen. That can sometimes be a challenge. The Rux simplified our pantry packing—I even managed to place the glass French press inside (long story!). The removable nesting tote and weather-resistant EDC pouch (included with the accessory bundle) allowed for packing and stacking a variety of items, and the solid construction allowed for everything to remain upright while traveling. The accessories can also be connected to the exterior of the tote, doubling your space using the utility rail system. Bonus: our kids were more than happy to carry it using all of the adaptable handles. The Rux can be configured to be carried like a bag or market tote, shoulder bag, side carry, and even backpack style. Having a background in design, I appreciate the clean lines and neutral colors of the Rux, and the content window makes it easy to see what is inside for effortless access. It is the perfect companion for transporting gear from trail to tent or keeping snacks handy on an overlanding trip. So far, we can find no fault with the Rux. Though in the neighborhood of other gear boxes at $265, the price is a little steep for us, given that we would like to buy more.

However, given that the company is committed to sustainability using recyclable materials that come apart for easy repair or replacement, and better yet, offers a lifetime warranty and is committed to 1% for the Planet, the price seems justified. The Rux team aims to “liberate you and your gear for a wildly dynamic life well-lived” and in our experience, they have done just that.
