POTD: Australian Army – Special Air Service Regiment

One of the goals of TFB’s Photo Of The Day is to share treasures from the world of firearms and soldiering, while giving credits to the photographer. Here we can see an Australian Army special forces soldier (on the right) from the Special Air Service Regiment and an Indonesian Army special forces soldier from Kopassus (Group III). They’re preparing to conduct a full-mission profile training activity using an Australian-made Indonesian Army Bushmaster protected mobility vehicle.

Australian and Indonesian special operations forces conducted Exercise Dawn Komodo 2021 together on Java, Indonesia, from 27 September to 08 October 2021 to further build mutual understanding and interoperability, and enhance regional security. Australian Army special operations force soldiers from the Special Air Service Regiment and the Special Operations Engineer Regiment joined Indonesian Army special forces from Kopassus (Group III) and Special Detachment 81 (Counter-Terrorism) to conduct maritime special operations and jungle warfare training. Australia and Indonesia have a strong defence relationship, built on a framework set out in the 2006 Lombok Treaty, the 2012 Defence Cooperation Agreement, and the 2014 Joint Understanding on Intelligence Cooperation.

The Australian Army’s Special Operations Command has strong bilateral relationships with selected Indonesian National Armed Forces special forces units, conducting several annual exercises. The Special Air Service Regiment and Special Operations Engineer Regiment are both Special Forces Group units within Special Operations Command. Special Operations Command is an Australian Army functional command whose mission is to prepare and employ special operations forces to defence Australia’s national interests.
